THINKGRILL Restaurant

My husband has been raving about the dinner we had last week at THINKGRILL.  Actually, take out---this small storefront is not particularly inviting for dining in.  Its Greek food--think gryos and kebabs.  But what my husband went nuts over was the half lamb shoulder.  For $18 he said it was better than any lamb he's had in a restaurant all year, and enough meat for two nights for him.  I don't love lamb, so went with a traditional gyro and greek salad instead, which were also good.

Best Teen Books for 2012

The State of Connecticut annually recognizes the best children's books.  I love their lists and always turn to them when I'm looking for new ideas for the kids.   Here are the best teen books for 2012.  My younger son--the big reader--loved both The Compound and The Hunger Games...haven't tried the others yet.

The Compound by S.A. Bodeen
Nine-year-old Eli, his sisters, and parents move into the Compound, an expansive underground bunker built by Eli's billionaire father as a refuge from nuclear attack. Waiting for the outside environment to be safe to reenter, fifteen -year -old Eli is starting to have doubts about his father's motives, explanations, and sanity. Can Eli trust his father?

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
In the ruins of North America lies the nation of Panem, a capitol surrounded by twelve districts. Each year, the districts send one boy and one girl to participate in Hunger Games, a brutal fight to the death televised for Panem’s entertainment. Sixteen-year-old Katniss steps in to take the place of her sister in the Hunger Games, hoping to survive the competition.
I Am a Genius of Unspeakable Evil and I Want to Be Your Class President by Josh Lieb
Running for seventh-grade class president looks easy to Oliver Watson. With his good looks, intelligence, and wealth, he can control his classmates, teachers, and parents. But can he control the outcome of an election?
The Maze Runner by James Dashner
Sixteen-year-old Thomas wakes up in an elevator with no memory except for his first name.  He’s arrived in “the glade,’ an area surrounded by stone walls that open to a maze every morning.  With him in the glade are about 60 boys, all searching for an escape route. And then a girl appears with a message, and things begin to change.
Ostrich Boys by Keith Gray
After their best friend Ross dies, English teenagers Blake, Kenny, and Sim plan a proper memorial by taking his ashes to Ross, Scotland, an adventure-filled journey that tests their loyalty to each other and forces them to question what friendship means.
Pop by Gordon Korman
Quarterback Marcus Jordan has a big problem: his new school isn’t interested in adding Marcus to their winning football team. Practicing in the park, Marcus meets a childlike 50-year-old by the name of Charlie with startling football abilities. Charlie’s pranks and spotty memory have Marcus wondering what Charlie’s story is.
Princess of the Midnight Ball by Jessica Day George
Galen, a soldier recently returned from the war, now works in the royal palace, where he meets 12 beautiful princesses.  As innocent as the king’s twelve daughters seem, they harbor a secret. Will Galen be the one to uncover what activity leaves their slippers in tatters, as if worn for years? Or will he, like the others, fail… and die for his trouble?
The Rock and the River by Kekla Magoon
The year is 1968 and the Civil Rights Movement is in full swing in Chicago, Illinois.  Teenager Sam Childs is caught between his father, who follows the non-violent path of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,  and his older brother who has joined the Black Panther Party and its sometimes violent methods.   Will Sam choose the rock or the river?
Scat by Carl Hiaasen
After mean Mrs. Starch goes missing during a class field trip to the Black Vine Swamp, two of her students, Nick and Marta, believe her disappearance is mysterious and that there is something strange about the note that she left behind.  Can Nick and Marta solve the mystery of the missing teacher?
Viola in Reel Life by Adriana Trigiani
Aspiring filmmaker 14-year-old Viola is the child of devoted documentary filmmakers, but her parents’ overseas assignment brings her to Prefect Academy, a boarding school for girls. Viola is sure that she’ll hate Prefect, but she befriends her roommates, learning that she can flourish in a new environment.

Love’s Labor’s Lost, Shakespeare’s delightful coming-of-age comedy, is a witty and hilarious ode to youthful aspirations, infatuations and follies.  The young King of Navarre, and his three loyal friends, decide to dedicate themselves to the “noble pursuit of knowledge” for three full years, locking themselves away from all distraction—especially women. Their ambitious “ivory tower” is soon shaken, with the arrival of the lovely Princess of France and her three gamesome ladies-in-waiting.  Filled with dazzling wordplay, strong comic characters and a few unexpected twists, Love’s Labor’s Lost not only charms, but also touches the heartstrings of young and old alike.  Director Abigail Isaac (“As You Like It” tour, 2010) returns with an exciting new staging of this delicious Shakespeare confection.

Year to Date Savings

According to the bottom of my Shoprite receipt, so far this year (6 months completed), I've saved $3100.   This includes all sales and coupons.   Assuming my taxes at about 33%, I would of had to earn about $4000 in the last six months to buy these groceries...or an extra $650 a month.   Of course, even without coupons, I would of bought things that were on sale, so the savings seems a bit exaggerated.

Looking at my Quicken, I'm estimating I spent about $2300 at Shoprite so far this year...a little less than $100 a week (I also shop other places...this isn't my entire grocery bill).  But from that perspective, I saved more than 50%.

What blows my mind is the crazed people on the couponing shows who claim that they save $40,000 a year.  Come on--do you buy that many groceries????!!!!!!   I guess if you have a stockpile to last until the end of time, perhaps...

Orzo with Roasted Vegetables on the Food Network

Family bbq on Sunday to celebrate my nephew's birthday. I'm planning on making this orzo salad from the Barefoot Contessa.
Great use for the basil I've been growing in pots by our front door! I might skip the roasted eggplant, which sounds like perhaps too much work.
Anyone have another great orzo salad recipe to suggest?

Easy Summer Cocktail Recipes

Summer Drinks

Three-Ingredient Summer Cocktails

The Times asked some of the country’s top bartenders to suggest streamlined coolers built for easy warm-weather drinking. The rules were simple: three ingredients, not counting straightforward garnishes, sugar, seltzer and simple syrup. The goal was loads of refreshment with minimal effort.

Grownup Book Suggestion

Here's a book to add to your summer reading list.."People of the Book" by Geraldine Brooks.  It uses as inspiration what is know as the Sarajevo Haggadah , and creates a tale of this book's history over centuries.  Brooks is a Pulitzer Prize winner for "March" (which is on my bedside table now) and certainly an author worth checking out.

Here's the review from Publishers Weekly.

Reading Geraldine Brooks's remarkable debut novel, Year of Wonders, or more recently March, which won the Pulitzer Prize, it would be easy to forget that she grew up in Australia and worked as a journalist. Now in her dazzling new novel, People of the Book, Brooks allows both her native land and current events to play a larger role while still continuing to mine the historical material that speaks so ardently to her imagination. Late one night in the city of Sydney, Hanna Heath, a rare book conservator, gets a phone call. The Sarajevo Haggadah, which disappeared during the siege in 1992, has been found, and Hanna has been invited by the U.N. to report on its condition. Missing documents and art works (as Dan Brown and Lev Grossman, among others, have demonstrated) are endlessly appealing, and from this inviting premise Brooks spins her story in two directions. In the present, we follow the resolutely independent Hanna through her thrilling first encounter with the beautifully illustrated codex and her discovery of the tiny signs-a white hair, an insect wing, missing clasps, a drop of salt, a wine stain-that will help her to discover its provenance. Along with the book she also meets its savior, a Muslim librarian named Karaman. Their romance offers both predictable pleasures and genuine surprises, as does the other main relationship in Hanna's life: her fraught connection with her mother. In the other strand of the narrative we learn, moving backward through time, how the codex came to be lost and found, and made. From the opening section, set in Sarajevo in 1940, to the final section, set in Seville in 1480, these narratives show Brooks writing at her very best. With equal authority she depicts the struggles of a young girl to escape the Nazis, a duel of wits between an inquisitor and a rabbi living in the Venice ghetto, and a girl's passionate relationship with her mistress in a harem. Like the illustrations in the Haggadah, each of these sections transports the reader to a fully realized, vividly peopled world. And each gives a glimpse of both the long history of anti-Semitism and of the struggle of women toward the independence that Hanna, despite her mother's lectures, tends to take for granted. Brooks is too good a novelist to belabor her political messages, but her depiction of the Haggadah bringing together Jews, Christians and Muslims could not be more timely. Her gift for storytelling, happily, is timeless. Copyright 2007 Publishers Weekly. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Shoprite Buy $75 Get $25 Gas Deal

Shoprite is offering a special, and too complicated, deal this week...Spend $75 in any combination of products from Kraft, P&G, General Mills, Unilever or Tyson and get a $25 Gas  Gift Card.  So it's a 33% savings...

How it Works:

This deal tracks on your Price Plus card for the entire week through 6/25. So, you can purchase products from these manufacturers in multiple transactions throughout the week. Once you hit the $75 mark, you will get a certificate printed at the bottom of your register receipt.
Once you earn your certificate, you pick up a gift card at the gift card display in the store and bring it the register to have it activated.

Fine Print:

Qualifying purchases are calculated BEFORE taxes, bottle deposits or fees, and the face value of manufacturer coupons and AFTER ShopRite store coupons, ShopRite Price Plus club card deductions and any doubled or tripled value of manufacturer coupons.  As I said, too confusing!!!
